The Hike Of Benbradagh
Sunday 11th October 2009
Schedule and Information

Timings

  • 10:00am - Hikers to meet at Gelvin Old School car park.
  • 10:15am – Briefing on walk route and information regarding the day.
  • 10:30am – Hikers leave for Benbradagh.
We anticipate that the hike will take approximately 4hrs, allowing for stops along the way. (We will take our time and travel at the speed of our slowest hiker).

Route
The hike will leave from Gelvin Old School and travel a short distance along the Legavallon Road, before turning left and walking upwards to the site of Tannyranny Old Church. From Tannyranny, we will climb ‘the front’ of Benbradagh travelling via Derryork, towards the peak of the mountain. We will descend down the back side of the mountain and join the road which circles the old American base.

We will follow this road until we reach the site of the old American base, where we will stop for light refreshments. From the base we will then descend Benbradagh along the marked route, downwards towards Lenamore forest.

We will enter Lenamore forest at its highest point and follow the forestry lane down, over Gelvin burn, until we reach the Gelvin Road. We will walk the Gelvin Road, and rejoin the Legavallon Road, and back to our finishing point at Gelvin Old School.

We estimate that our journey is approximately 4.5 miles.

Refreshments
Water will be supplied at the start of the hike and again at the halfway point. Light refreshments will be served at the top of the mountain at the old American base. Warm refreshments will be provided for all at St. Matthew’s GAC Community Hall on our return. You do not need to bring any food or drink with you – so please travel light!!

Clothing
This hike is very much an outdoor pursuit and you should dress accordingly. As a result of the poor summer this year Benbradagh is particularly wet in places and it is therefore recommended that you wear appropriate water proof clothing and foot wear, as certain parts of our route is very soft under foot. You may find it useful to carry a ‘good’ stick to aid your balance in the rough.

Sponsorship
Sponsorship can be paid in cash. If however you would like to pay by cheque, these should be made payable to “St. Matthew’s GAC Drumsurn”. Please make an effort to have all sponsorship money paid as soon after the Hike as is possible.
