Limavady 1-08 Drumsurn 1-13

Jump Micky JumpThe seniors won their championship clash on Friday night against Limavady by five points. This game had the thrills and spills of a championship encounter. In the first eleven minutes Limavady were reduced to fourteen men. Drumsurn then missed three clear cut goal scoring opportunities, Francis Chivers made an amazing point blank save pushing the ball out off a post and Cahir Mullan made an incredible penalty save.

Mark O'Connor played a major role for Drumsurn in the first half. His strength and ability to run straight at the Limavady defenders caused them major problems. In the third minute of the game he found himself one on one with the goalkeeper only to have his shot saved. Cahir Mullan starting in midfield was a match for Paul Brown, balls he didn't catch he ensured the Limavady men didn't get a free catch on them.

Conal Chivers played the spare man and instigated all the Drumsurn attacks down the left wing bypassing the big Limavady midfield, his outlet Paul Butcher started to find space and made numerous telling runs setting up a goal for Pierce McNickle and points for Ciaran Mullan and Danny O'Connor.

For periods of the game Drumsurn lived dangerously and at times it looked as if they were reduced to fourteen men and not Limavady. They dominated possession but couldn't turn it into points. Limavady scored three successive points in the last few minutes of the half to end it with a three point lead.

Two unanswered points from Danny O'Connor at the start of the second half brought the teams level. A remarkable fifth minute save from Francis Chivers kept the teams level and was the catalyst for the Drumsurn revival. Up popped Ciaran Mullan and Danny O'Connor to score two points, to put two points between the teams. Colm Forrest scored Limavady's first point of the half in the tenth minute to reduce the lead to a single point before Pierce McNickle scored a well worked goal to put four points between the team for the first time in the match.

Four points became six after Pierce McNickle and Mark O'Connor both scored from play. With ten minutes remaining Drumsurn went to sleep for five of them. They conceded a penalty and with a quick change of goalkeeper Cahir Mullan made a spectacular save, diving to his right pushing the low shot from Paul Brown away from goal.

In the twenty second minute Conor Forrest broke through the Drumsurn defence unchallenged and kicked a right footed shot to the back of the net. He followed it up three minutes later with a short range free kick reducing Drumsurn's lead from six points to two, making for a nail biting finish to a scrappy game.

With two minutes remaining of normal time Danny O'Connor kicked his fourth point of the game (all from play). Ciaran Mullan followed this up a minute later to ease the pressure on the Drumsurn team and seal the victory. In additional time Ciaran converted a free kick as an assurance point.

For the duration of this game Ciaran Mullan was subjected to unbelievable physical abuse. The referee and lines men did well to control the game but the four local umpires could have supported them a little bit more, had they done so Limavady could have and should have finished the game with less than fourteen men.
