Dungiven win Carlin Duffy repeat
Kevin Farren saved a last minute penalty from Ciaran Ferris to keep Dungiven in the Carlin Duffy Cup at the expense of St Patrick’s.
The parish rivals, who met in last year’s final, turned in an entertaining encounter, with Martin burke’s two goals proving the difference in the end.
His first was a fluke from a 45’ that dropped beneath the crossbar, his second altogether more deliberate as he sent Daniel Mullan the wrong way with an emphatic penalty at the start of the second half.
Dungiven’s start to the second half was just the start that St. Patrick’s had needed. The Drum / Drumsurn boys disappointed in the first half, with only Cahir Friel looking like he could get at Dungiven’s defence.
Burke’s first goal helped Dungiven lead 1-06 to 0-03 at half time, and a 1-01 salvo on the restart hed them nine points to the good.
St. Patrick’s aided by the wind, mounted a brave fight back and when Seamus O’Kane’s fisted cross was fumbled over his line by Farren, we had the makings of a game.
Brian ÓMcGilligan’s switch out to midfield completely negated the influence of Cahir Mullan and when Cathair Friel was given a straight red card it looked like curtains.
With just a goal in it, Conor O’Reilly was fouled inside the area in injury time but Kevin Farren guessed right to save Ciaran Ferris’s poorly taken penalty, sending Dungiven through.
